In the spring of 1993, a 31-year-old woman named Consuelo Vannausdle, affectionately known as Connie, disappeared from her home in Lacey, Washington. A native of the Philippines who became a U.S. citizen after moving to the country in 1987, she was a devoted mother to her two young children. Connie was known for maintaining close contact with her family, both in California and the Philippines, making her sudden silence deeply uncharacteristic. The last confirmed sighting of her was on April 25, 1993, although some agencies list the date as May 1, 1993. At the time of her disappearance, there was a possibility that she was pregnant with her third child. She was described as an Asian female with black hair, brown eyes, and a distinctive birthmark on her left shoulder. The circumstances surrounding Consuelo's disappearance quickly raised suspicion. Her husband, Mark, never reported her missing to the authorities. It was Connie's sister in California who, after months of being unable to reach her, filed a missing person report with the Lacey Police Department on July 2, 1993. When questioned, Mark Vannausdle claimed that his wife had simply walked out of their home and never returned. He later suggested that she had been depressed and might have taken her own life, a claim that investigators found no evidence to support. The couple's relationship was known to be troubled, with Connie's mother having witnessed at least one violent incident between them. Adding to the suspicion, investigators discovered that Mark had installed new carpeting and repainted the walls of their home shortly after his wife was last seen. Authorities have long suspected foul play in Consuelo's disappearance and consider her husband a person of interest in the case, which they are treating as a likely homicide. Mark Vannausdle's subsequent actions did little to dispel these suspicions. In 2002, he was arrested for shooting a cab driver and stealing the vehicle, a crime for which he was sentenced to twenty years in prison. During that arrest, police found a map from 1993 and other items they deemed suspicious. Fifteen years after she vanished, in 2008, the local coroner issued a death certificate for Consuelo, stating that her death could have been the result of homicidal violence. Despite the strong suspicions and the passage of time, no one has ever been charged in connection with Consuelo Vannausdle's disappearance, and her case remains an unsolved and painful mystery for her loved ones.
