Chance Wackerhagen, a 9-year-old boy, disappeared from Lockhart, Texas, on December 26, 1993, while spending the holidays with his non-custodial father, Lee Wackerhagen. On the day after Christmas, Chance and his father were last seen having dinner at a local restaurant. The following day, Latricia White, Lee’s girlfriend, was found shot to death in her home, but both Lee and Chance had vanished.
Authorities initially suspected that Lee had killed Latricia and fled with his son, as a warrant was issued for his arrest. Lee’s abandoned truck was later discovered in Austin, Texas, with blood-streaked Christmas gifts inside, but forensic tests were inconclusive. Investigators found Chance’s footprint in the blood at the crime scene, suggesting he may have been present during or shortly after the murder. Despite these disturbing clues, neither Lee nor Chance were ever found.
In 2016, the investigation was reopened, and law enforcement now believes that both Lee and Chance were victims of foul play. Authorities suspect that the murder was a crime of passion committed by someone close to one or more of the victims.
