In the early morning hours of April 11, 1994, 21-year-old James "Jimmy" Cole vanished while walking home in Severna Park, Maryland. The evening prior, he and his brother had been socializing at two local establishments, the Shangri-La restaurant and the Gingerbread Man. After his brother went home, Cole returned to the Shangri-La. He was last seen leaving the bar alone around 1:30 a.m., visibly intoxicated.
His home on Hodges Lane was only a short, four-block walk away, a trek he had made many times before as he did not own a car. When he failed to return home, his family became concerned and initiated a search of the neighborhood before officially reporting him missing.
At the time of his disappearance, James Cole was described as a white male, 5'6" to 5'7" tall, and weighing about 140 pounds. He had brown, shoulder-length hair, brown eyes, and a distinctive tattoo of a black widow spider on his right forearm. He was last seen wearing a green rugby shirt, Levi's jeans, beige and black sport shoes, and a green "Loyola" baseball cap. Cole was a graduate of Severna Park High School and was employed by K&J Maintenance Co. He left behind all of his personal belongings and never collected his final paycheck. His family has stated that it was uncharacteristic of him to disappear without contacting anyone, as he was close to his relatives and had been in a serious relationship with his girlfriend for three years.
Despite the passage of time, the investigation into James Cole's disappearance has remained open. Over the years, there have been efforts to revive the case, including a renewed search in 2012 along the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail, a path he may have taken home. This search utilized volunteer search and rescue teams with trained canines, and while some items were collected for further examination, it is not publicly known if they were connected to the case. One unconfirmed sighting was reported a month after he vanished, by an acquaintance who claimed to have seen him at a Taco Bell in a nearby town; however, Cole's parents did not believe the sighting was credible. The fact that Cole was adopted presented a challenge for investigators, as it took over a decade to locate biological relatives to provide DNA samples for comparison with unidentified remains. His family, who later moved to Texas, continues to seek answers and closure in his case.
