In the winter of 1996, a seven-year-old girl named Karen Rosalba Grajeda vanished from the courtyard of her Tucson, Arizona, apartment complex, leaving behind a community gripped by fear and a family devastated by her absence. On the evening of January 11th, Karen, a first-grade student at Elvira Elementary School, was enjoying the cool weather, roller-skating with her younger sister and friends. She was a friendly and talkative child who loved playing Nintendo and riding her bicycle. At approximately 6:00 p.m., Karen went inside her family's apartment in the Saguaro Crest Apartments on West Valencia Street to put away her skates. She asked her mother if she could go back outside to play for a little while longer, and her mother agreed. Around 6:30 p.m., when her mother called her in for dinner, Karen was nowhere to be found. No one in the courtyard had seen her leave or heard any signs of a struggle. The search for Karen began immediately, with law enforcement, the FBI, and community members combing the area, but no trace of the little girl was ever found. The investigation into Karen's disappearance quickly focused on the possibility of a non-family abduction. Her family members were cleared of any involvement early on. Detectives explored several potential leads, including a man seen loitering in the apartment complex around the time Karen went missing. This individual was described as a white or Hispanic male, between 30 and 46 years old, with light brown hair. Authorities also considered a possible link to the abduction and murder of another young girl, six-year-old Esther "Lizette" Galaz, who had been taken from a nearby apartment complex in 1994 under eerily similar circumstances. Both girls were Hispanic, disappeared around the same time of day, and were wearing similar clothing. Another person of interest was Rodolfo Sedeno Morales, a convicted child abductor who lived in the same apartment complex as Karen in 1996 and was responsible for a series of assaults on young Hispanic girls in the Tucson area between 1993 and 1994. Despite these leads, no one has ever been charged in connection with Karen's disappearance. For decades, the Tucson Police Department and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have continued to investigate Karen's case, which has left a lasting impact on the community. Age-progression photos have been released to show what Karen might look like as an adult, in the hope that someone might recognize her. Her family has never given up hope of finding answers and has held onto memories of their smiling, innocent child.
