Trudy Leann Appleby was an 11-year-old girl from Moline, Illinois, whose life was tragically cut short in August 1996. On the morning of August 21st, Trudy was seen for the last time near her home. A neighbor reported seeing her get into a silver or gray, box-style car with a man described as being in his 20s with brown, curly hair. She had plans to go swimming that day, and although her father had told her no, phone records suggest she may have intended to go anyway. When her father returned home from work, Trudy was gone, leaving behind money she had saved for an upcoming family vacation. The initial investigation into Trudy's disappearance faced many challenges, and for years, her case remained cold. The community, however, never gave up hope, holding annual vigils to keep her memory alive and to continue to press for answers. Over the years, law enforcement identified several persons of interest. One was a family friend named William "Ed" Smith, who owned a car similar to the one Trudy was last seen in; this vehicle was reportedly scrapped shortly after her disappearance. Two other men, David Whipple and Jamison Fisher, were also named as persons of interest. Investigators believed these men held crucial information about what had happened to Trudy. In a significant development, a boat believed to be connected to the case was seized and tested by the FBI. Decades after she vanished, a breakthrough in the case finally occurred. Jamison Fisher was indicted by a grand jury and arrested. He was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with Trudy's disappearance. Authorities have accused Fisher of kidnapping and strangling the young girl. Court documents later revealed that witness testimony is expected to detail a motive connected to a drug debt owed by Trudy's father. One witness allegedly saw Fisher with Trudy on the day she disappeared. Tragically, Trudy's body has never been found. The arrest brought a sense of resolution and accountability for Trudy's family and the community that had mourned her for so long. While the pain of her loss remains, the progress in the case represents a significant step towards justice for Trudy Appleby.
