This was the last time anyone reported seeing the six friends. When none of them returned to their respective homes, their families grew concerned and reported them missing to the authorities. The disappearance of six individuals at once sparked immediate concern and a search for answers.
For months, there was no sign of the missing group or the vehicle they were traveling in. The families anxiously awaited any news, while law enforcement conducted their investigation. The break in the case came on September 29, 1999, over four months after their disappearance, when Stackhouse's Chevrolet Caprice was discovered submerged in the Pea River in Coffee County, Alabama. Tragically, the remains of five of the individuals who had gone missing were found inside the vehicle. The bodies of Lamar Junior Stackhouse, Valerie Jones McCoy, Evla Jossett Lee, Tamara Monique Ward, and Angela Roberts Young were recovered from the car. However, James Anthony Reynolds was not found with his friends, and his whereabouts remained a mystery.
Despite extensive searches of the Pea River and the surrounding areas, James Reynolds' body was never located.
