In the fall of 2023, a devoted runner named Chad Pallansch, a 49-year-old from Fort Collins, Colorado, embarked on a challenging trail run in the vast wilderness of Rocky Mountain National Park. On September 27th, he set out from the East Inlet Trailhead near Grand Lake, with an ambitious 28-mile route ahead of him. His planned journey was a testament to his fitness and experience, involving travel across the Continental Divide on both established trails and difficult off-trail terrain,
including steep talus slopes. Pallansch was a seasoned marathon and trail runner, familiar with the park's demanding environment and having summited Longs Peak more than 30 times. The last known communication from him was a text message sent around noon that day, indicating he was nearing the summit of Mount Alice. After that, he vanished.
When Pallansch did not return as planned, he was reported overdue on September 28, prompting an immediate response from park rangers. They located his vehicle at the North Inlet Trailhead, confirming the starting point of his extensive run. This discovery triggered a large-scale search and rescue operation in the rugged terrain he was believed to have been navigating. Over the subsequent days, numerous agencies and dedicated individuals joined the effort.
