Jay-Quan Mosley, an infant from Jacksonville, Florida, went missing on April 22, 2004, when he was just nine months old. He was last seen with his mother, Lynda Wilkes, at a strip mall on Dunn Avenue in Jacksonville. That afternoon, they were picked up by Jay-Quan’s father, John Mosley, who told authorities that he took them for a short drive before dropping them back at the mall. However, neither Jay-Quan nor his mother were ever seen alive again.
Lynda Wilkes’s family reported her missing when she failed to pick up her other children from school. A search ensued, and her car was found abandoned at the mall. Two weeks later, Wilkes's burned body was discovered in a remote area of Alachua County. Investigators suspected foul play early on, as it was uncharacteristic for Wilkes to leave without any baby supplies for Jay-Quan. Despite a large-scale search, Jay-Quan’s body was never recovered.
John Mosley was arrested shortly after the disappearances and charged with the murders of both Lynda and Jay-Quan. Investigators concluded that Mosley, who was ordered to pay child support, was motivated to kill to avoid the financial burden. Testimony during the trial revealed that Mosley had strangled Wilkes and suffocated Jay-Quan by placing him in a plastic bag, disposing of their bodies in separate locations. Mosley was convicted of both murders and sentenced to death for killing Jay-Quan, while receiving life in prison for Wilkes’s murder.
