In the late spring of 2004, a then 19-year-old Male named Avi Keys disappeared from Fairbanks, Alaska. His last confirmed sighting was sometime in the second half of May of that year. Keys, who grew up in Wasilla and was raised by his father, was described as a white male with black hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'6" and weighing around 140 pounds. The circumstances leading up to his disappearance were entangled in a dark and dangerous series of events involving drug use and a gruesome crime. Just days before he went missing, on May 13, 2004, Keys was in a car with three other men: Jason Fisher, David Mason, and Josiah Thurneau. All four were reportedly on a methamphetamine binge that had lasted for days. During that car ride, Jason Fisher shot and killed David Mason. A couple of days later, police tried to pull over a vehicle driven by Keys, with Fisher as a passenger, for a traffic violation. Unbeknownst to the officers at the time, Mason's dismembered body was in the trunk. This led to a high-speed chase which resulted in Keys's arrest on charges of driving under the influence, failure to stop for a peace officer, and criminal mischief, while Fisher managed to escape. After his father bailed him out of jail, Avi Keys told him not to worry if he didn't come back for a few days and then vanished. Initially, law enforcement believed Keys was on the run to avoid his court dates for the charges stemming from the police chase, and a warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to appear. Weeks later, the gruesome contents of the impounded car were discovered. As time passed with no word from Keys to his family or friends, concern grew, and the official belief shifted from him being a fugitive to the possibility of him having met with foul play. Jason Fisher was eventually convicted of second-degree murder for David Mason's death and is serving a lengthy prison sentence, but he has denied knowing what happened to Keys. The case remains a troubling mystery, leaving his loved ones without answers as to whether Avi Keys chose to disappear or became another victim in a tragic series of events.
