In the autumn of 2023, Katheryn 'Katie' Ferguson, a 34-year-old mother of two, embarked on a cross-country journey that would end in her vanishing without a trace. She was traveling with her ex-boyfriend, Adam Aviles Jr., and their two young daughters, heading from Alabama back to their home in Cody, Wyoming. The family had spent the summer visiting Ferguson's relatives. The last confirmed sighting of Katie alive was on a rainy morning in October 2023, in the small town of Trumann, Arkansas. A police officer approached their parked black Dodge Durango to check on the family's welfare. Body camera footage from this encounter shows Ferguson in the passenger seat, appearing tired but smiling politely as she folded baby clothes, with her children in the vehicle. She informed the officer that they were just passing through on their way to Wyoming. This interaction would tragically be the last time anyone has definitively reported seeing her.
The journey continued, but somewhere between Arkansas and Wyoming, Katheryn Ferguson disappeared. Days after the police check-in in Trumann, Aviles was seen again during a traffic stop in Texas, but this time, Ferguson was not in the vehicle. Ominously, a piece of tape was visible on the passenger side door of the Durango. Concerns for Katie's welfare grew, and on November 2, 2023, her mother officially reported her missing to the Cody Police Department after being unable to contact her. Just two days later, Aviles' Durango was discovered abandoned in a remote area in Park County, Wyoming. The state of the vehicle raised immediate and grave concerns. Investigators who responded to the scene noted the smell of 'putrefied blood' inside the SUV. The front passenger seat, where Katie was last seen sitting, had been completely removed. The interior was in disarray, littered with Clorox wipes, and investigators found a suspected bullet hole in the front passenger door that had been covered with duct tape.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on Adam Aviles Jr. Inside the abandoned vehicle, authorities discovered a fully loaded. 45 caliber magazine, numerous blood-stained items, and evidence that multiple shots had been fired. Aviles, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, was arrested in early November 2023. While he has not been directly charged in connection with Ferguson's disappearance or death, he was sentenced to 87 months, just over seven years, in federal prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition. During the sentencing, a federal judge stated there was evidence presented that Aviles unlawfully possessed the ammunition in connection with the voluntary manslaughter of Katheryn Ferguson. Although her body has not been recovered, authorities presume that Katie is deceased. The case remains a heartbreaking mystery for her family, who are left to grieve a doting mother described as a 'goofball,' while law enforcement continues to seek answers and search for her remains.
