In the early hours of March 10, 2007, 20-year-old Jamie Harper was last seen in Rantoul, Illinois. The previous evening, March 9, she had left her mother's home in Paxton to go to a party with a male companion in the 1300 block of Laurel Drive. Jamie was last seen at the gathering at approximately 4:30 a.m. She had made arrangements to spend the night at a friend's house, but she never made it there and did not return home. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a white jacket, blue jeans, and sandals, and was carrying a small black bag. Jamie has a tattoo of a tribal design on her lower back, pierced ears, and a piercing in her left nostril.
Her mother officially reported her missing to the Paxton Police Department a week after she was last seen. The delay in reporting was due to Jamie having previously stayed away from home for a few days at a time. The circumstances of her disappearance were immediately concerning, as she had left behind all of her personal belongings, including crucial daily medication required for her epilepsy. Her boyfriend, who had accompanied her to the party, told police he had to leave but that Jamie was planning to get a ride home from someone else. He was initially considered a person of interest, but investigators later stated he was not a suspect in her disappearance. Sometime after she vanished, police received an anonymous tip that Jamie had died of an overdose and her body had been disposed of in an area southeast of Paxton known as Dogtown, which contains three gravel pits. An extensive search of this area was conducted, but no evidence related to Jamie's whereabouts was discovered.
Investigators have stated there are similarities between Jamie's case and the 1997 disappearance of another young woman, Heather Zimmerman, who also went missing from the Rantoul area. A person of interest, a 30-year-old man from Rantoul who was at the party Jamie attended, has been identified in her case. This same individual is also a person of interest in Heather Zimmerman's disappearance. According to reports, this man was seen leaving the party with Jamie but returned about an hour and a half later by himself. He was brought in for questioning by police but refused to undergo a polygraph examination. The case remains an active investigation, shadowed by the fact that a young woman vanished after a night out, leaving behind essential medication and all her possessions. Despite a person of interest being identified who may be linked to another local disappearance, no arrests have been made, and what happened to Jamie Harper after she left the party remains unknown.
