Robert Arthur Wiles, a 26-year-old business development manager for his family's aircraft maintenance company, National Flight Services, was last seen on April 1, 2008, at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland, Florida, where he worked. Two days later, his family received a ransom note demanding $750,000. Despite following the instructions and leaving the money, no one came to collect it, and Wiles was never heard from again.
Wiles’ disappearance led to a lengthy investigation, and in December 2009, a former co-worker, Stobert "Toby" Holt, was arrested and later convicted of manslaughter, extortion, and writing threats related to the case. Holt was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Despite the conviction, Robert Wiles' body has never been found, and he is presumed dead.
Wiles was an athletic and adventurous individual who loved flying, diving, and fishing. He had traveled extensively for work, including trips across the U.S. and internationally.
