In the early morning hours of a thunderous day in January 1975, Charles "Spike" Ulrich, a 62-year-old man from Uhrichsville, Ohio, disappeared from his home in the Riverside area. His wife of 41 years awoke around 7:00 a.m. to find him gone and the front door ajar. This was highly uncharacteristic, as he had a consistent morning routine of making coffee and waking her for a religious television program, a routine he did not follow on the day he went missing. Adding to the mystery, he left behind all his personal belongings, including his keys, wallet, money, and pocketknife, which he habitually placed on the kitchen counter each night. His vehicle remained in the garage, and his pajamas were found tossed across the bed, a departure from his usual habit of folding them neatly. The days leading up to his disappearance held subtle but unsettling events. Two nights prior, his wife was awakened by what she thought was the sound of the front door closing. Charles investigated with a shotgun but found no signs of an intruder. The evening before he vanished, he received a phone call and afterward remarked to his wife, "You know, if it was a year later, I would retire," without revealing the caller or the nature of the conversation. In the hours surrounding his disappearance, a neighbor reported seeing car lights in the Ulrichs' driveway around 6:30 a.m., and another neighbor saw a man standing by the road as if waiting for a ride. Despite extensive searches by police and community members on foot, by car, on horseback, and with boats, no trace of Charles was ever found. Charles Ulrich was described by those who knew him as a witty, eloquent, and deeply religious man. A World War II veteran who served in the United States Naval Construction Forces, he was an elder and Sunday school teacher at his local Moravian Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was in good health, had a happy marriage, and no known debts or depression. He worked as a claims examiner for the Bureau of Employment Services, where his caseload had significantly increased in the time before he went missing. In 1980, five years after he was last seen, Charles Ulrich was declared legally dead, but the circumstances of his disappearance remain a profound and unsolved mystery. The case is a collection of puzzling details, from the strange occurrences in the days prior to his vanishing to the inexplicable manner in which he left his life behind, leaving his family and community with unanswered questions.
