In the summer of 1976, 21-year-old Rebecca 'Becky' Kellison was on the verge of a new chapter in her life, just two days shy of her graduation from the Lane Beauty Academy in Aurora, Colorado. The night before her disappearance, she enjoyed an evening out with her sister and brother-in-law at nightclubs in Denver. She stayed the night at her sister's home in the vicinity of East Colfax Avenue and Madison Street.
On the morning of June 19, 1976, between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., she left her sister's residence, leaving behind a simple note that read, 'I'm going home,' signed with love. This was the last time her family would ever hear from her. Without her own car, it is believed she may have started to hitchhike for the journey back to her home in Aurora to study for her final exam.
Initially, law enforcement treated her disappearance as a potential runaway case, a theory her family vehemently disputed. They described Becky as a person who was deeply connected to her family and would not have willingly caused them distress, especially considering her father's poor health at the time. For over a year, there were no significant developments in the case, leaving her loved ones in a state of agonizing uncertainty. A grim discovery in December of 1977 shifted the focus of the investigation. A farmer plowing a field in rural Adams County unearthed several items of clothing. Investigators were called to the scene and soon uncovered Rebecca's blue shoulder purse, which contained her Armed Forces Dependent Identification Card. Also found buried in the field were her blue jeans, a brown suede jacket, a short-sleeve knit shirt, multicolored bikini-style underwear, and black boots. Despite a search of the area, Rebecca's remains were not located.
