Dorothy “Dee” Scofield, aged 12, disappeared on July 22, 1976, in Ocala, Florida. That day, Dorothy had accompanied her mother to a shopping center while her mother took a driving test nearby. Dorothy was last seen around 2:00 p.m. at the J.M. Fields department store, where she returned a pair of sandals and purchased a birthday present for her brother. She never returned to meet her mother as planned, and she was reported missing shortly afterward.
There were potential sightings of Dorothy later that afternoon. A clerk at a convenience store about eight miles away from the shopping center reported seeing a girl matching Dorothy's description with one or two men. The girl appeared frightened, but the men and the girl were never identified. Despite extensive searches and investigations, no solid leads emerged.
Dorothy’s family worked tirelessly to find her, even offering a reward, but her case remains unsolved. Some speculated her case might be linked to other disappearances in Florida during the 1970s, but no definitive connections have been made.
