On October 8, 1976, 16-year-old Trenny Gibson, a student at Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, embarked on a horticulture class field trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The destination, Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the park, was kept a surprise from the approximately 40 students until they were on the bus.
