On October 8, 1976, 16-year-old Trenny Gibson, a student at Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, embarked on a horticulture class field trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The destination, Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the park, was kept a surprise from the approximately 40 students until they were on the bus. Trenny, described as a good student with an interest in landscape architecture, was five feet three inches tall, weighed 115 pounds, and had brown hair. For the trip, she wore blue jeans, a blue blouse, a blue and white striped sweater, a borrowed brown plaid jacket, and blue Adidas shoes. She also wore a star sapphire and diamond ring. The weather that day was poor, but the trip proceeded as planned. Trenny left her purse and books in a car, taking only her lunch with her.
During the field trip, the students hiked the roughly 1.8-mile Forney Ridge Trail to Andrews Bald and back. The students broke into smaller groups along the trail. Trenny was last seen at approximately 3:00 p.m. on the return hike, about half a mile from the parking area where the school buses were waiting. Accounts from classmates suggest that while some students stopped to rest, Trenny continued ahead, seemingly eager to get back to the bus. One student recalled her stopping to look at something to the right of the trail before she vanished. When the group reassembled at the buses around 3:30 p.m., Trenny was not there. An initial search by the teacher and a student proved fruitless, and she was reported missing.
An extensive search was launched, involving volunteers, law enforcement, and park staff, and continued until the end of October 1976. Tracking dogs were brought in and picked up Trenny's scent. One trail led them toward the Forney Creek Trail, while another followed her scent near the Clingmans Dome observation tower for about a mile and a half before it ended near a road. Despite these efforts, and a renewed search initiated by her father the following April, no physical evidence of Trenny, not even a piece of her clothing, has ever been found. The FBI launched an investigation, but their findings were not made public. Over the years, various theories have emerged, including that she became lost and was picked up by a stranger, or that she was abducted from the trail. The disappearance of Trenny Gibson remains one of the most perplexing unsolved cases in the history of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a deeply unsettling mystery of a young girl who vanished without a trace from a popular trail in a busy national park.
