Elizabeth Dorothy Funchess was just six months old when she was last seen on September 6, 1977, at her family's home in San Jose, California. That day, a neighbor visited and found everything to be normal. Elizabeth's mother, Diane Edith Funchess, had just finished breastfeeding her daughter, and the two discussed a recent family trip to Florida. This was the last known sighting of both Diane and Elizabeth.
Later that day, the two vanished, leaving behind their belongings, including Diane's eyeglasses and car.
When authorities arrived at the home, they discovered that a cord from the television had been cut and taken, but there were no signs of a struggle. Investigators initially suspected that Elizabeth and her mother may have been abducted, possibly with the intent of selling the baby for adoption. Diane's skeletal remains were found four years later in 1981, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, near where her husband worked. However, Elizabeth has never been found, and her whereabouts remain a mystery. Authorities continue to investigate the case, and there is some belief that Elizabeth may still be alive, unaware of her true identity.
