On a spring day in April of 1979, ten-year-old Randy Doyle Parscale Jr. was enjoying a family outing in the scenic Peppersauce Canyon, located in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Oracle, Arizona. The young boy, described as a third-grader at Roberts Elementary School, was hiking with his grandfather and two brothers. At some point during the hike, Randy, who was known to be a bit of a 'loner' and enjoyed doing things on his own, wandered ahead of his family members and disappeared
around a bend in the trail. When his family reached the same spot moments later, the boy was nowhere to be seen. This was the last time Randy Parscale was ever seen. He was a Caucasian male with brown hair and blue eyes, stood at 4'6' tall, and weighed approximately 70 pounds. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a long-sleeved red and green striped shirt, an olive-green hunter's vest or jacket, blue jeans, and shoes that had a distinctive bulls-eye pattern on the soles.
Immediately following Randy's disappearance, an extensive and exhaustive search of Peppersauce Canyon and the surrounding rugged terrain was launched. For nearly a week, hundreds of searchers, aided by scent-tracking dogs and helicopters, scoured the area, including caves and old mine shafts, but found no trace of the missing boy. One of the few clues discovered was a set of Randy's footprints that led to a dirt road, where they abruptly stopped. This led investigators to believe that he may have gotten into a vehicle at that location. The Pinal County Sheriff's Office has considered the possibility that Randy was abducted and may still be alive. Over the years, a few potential leads have emerged, though none have led to a resolution. In 1985, a woman reported finding a dollar bill with a message that read, 'I'm alive in Phoenix, Ariz. Help me. Randy Parscale.' Another lead surfaced in 1989 when it was discovered that a man with a physical description matching Randy's had been using his Social Security number at a construction site in Phoenix. However, by the time Randy's father went to investigate, the individual had already left the job and could not be located.
The disappearance of Randy Parscale has remained an unsolved mystery for decades, leaving his family with unanswered questions and a void that can never be filled. The official classification of his case has been noted as a possible non-family abduction, though theories also include the possibility that he became lost in the vast wilderness or fell into one of the area's many abandoned mine shafts. The emotional toll on his family has been immense; sadly, his father passed away in 2005 without ever knowing what became of his son. Despite the passage of time, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office continues to list Randy's case as an active cold case, holding out hope that new information will one day surface.
