In the spring of 1979, 24-year-old Elaine Marie Robertson, a resident of San Luis Obispo, California, embarked on a journey to Washington. It was Memorial Day weekend, and Elaine, who was in the process of earning her master's degree, was described as an adventurous spirit. She traveled north in her 1968 Volkswagen camper van, accompanied by her dog, with plans to visit a friend and explore the Mount Rainier area. The last confirmed sighting of Elaine was on May 27, 1979. On a rainy evening, she wandered into the Sunshine Point campground at Mount Rainier, appearing wet, cold, and not entirely coherent. Kind campers offered her a tent for the night. The following morning, both Elaine and her dog were gone, leaving all of her personal belongings behind at the campsite. The discovery of Elaine's abandoned campsite triggered an extensive search of the rugged terrain surrounding Mount Rainier. Despite the efforts of approximately 100 searchers, a helicopter, and canine units, no trace of Elaine or her dog was found. Her Volkswagen van was located, but reports differ on whether it was found within a mile of the campground or as far as 40 miles away in Elk Plain on the Mountain Highway. The vehicle, a white or beige van with California license plate number 752NRV, offered no clues as to her whereabouts. The investigation was further complicated years later when, in November 2006, severe flooding on the Nisqually River washed away the Sunshine Point campground entirely, erasing a key location in the timeline of her disappearance. Decades have passed since Elaine Robertson vanished, and her case remains one of the oldest unsolved missing person cases in Pierce County. Investigators have considered several theories over the years. The possibility of her succumbing to the elements or an accidental fall has been considered, though some investigators find it unlikely that neither she nor her dog would have been found. Another theory that has been explored is the possibility of foul play, with some speculating she could have been a victim of a serial killer active in Washington during that era. With no new leads and the passage of time, authorities are concerned that the generation of people who might hold information about her disappearance is dwindling. The disappearance of Elaine Marie Robertson is a perplexing case that began with a young woman on an adventure and ended with a lingering mystery in the shadow of Mount Rainier.
