Jessie Albertine Hoover, a 53-year-old woman from White Settlement, Texas, went missing on May 20, 1983, during a hike in Maine's remote 100-Mile Wilderness section of the Appalachian Trail. After losing her husband in a car accident in 1982, Hoover became determined to hike the Appalachian Trail despite having little hiking experience and suffering from epilepsy. Her family expressed concerns about her readiness, but she remained adamant about undertaking the journey.
