On a summer day in July 1984, 14-year-old Christopher James Harvey was enjoying a family vacation at a mobile home park on the edge of the San Juan National Forest in Hinsdale County, Colorado. The Harvey family, residents of Andrews, Texas, often spent their summers at their trailer home, embracing the outdoor activities the area offered. On the afternoon of July 11th, Christopher visited with a neighbor and discussed his excitement about an upcoming band camp he planned to attend.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., he returned to his family's trailer, took their dog, and set out for a walk in the woods. While the dog later returned to the trailer alone, Christopher was never seen again.
Initially, authorities believed the teenager, an experienced backpacker, had simply gotten lost while hiking. However, he did not have any supplies with him for an extended period in the wilderness. An extensive search of the area involving local and state law enforcement, as well as community volunteers, was launched the following day, but no trace of Christopher was ever found. The lack of any evidence led investigators to conclude that he was likely no longer in the county. The search efforts continued for days, and about a week after he vanished, the Federal Bureau of Investigation joined the search.
Six weeks after Christopher's disappearance, a glimmer of hope emerged when a severely beaten teenage boy was found on a remote mountain road near Gypsum, Colorado. The boy was unable to communicate and had no identification. Christopher's parents traveled to the hospital and, despite his severe facial injuries, initially identified the boy as their son. However, as days passed, doubts began to surface, and a comparison of dental records ultimately confirmed the injured teen was not Christopher. He was later identified as an 18-year-old who had gone missing while hitchhiking. This heart-wrenching turn of events shifted the focus of Christopher's case, and foul play became the prevailing theory.
