Friends described him as a good kid who had, unfortunately, fallen in with a rough crowd and become involved with drugs. This involvement reportedly led to a bad drug deal, which is believed to be a primary reason for his decision to leave his home state.
On March 14, 1985, Rodney had his last known contact with law enforcement in Omaha, Nebraska. It is believed that shortly after this, he left Nebraska, possibly with another man and a pregnant woman. He was driving his yellow Ford Pinto with Nebraska license plates at the time.
The initial period after Rodney's departure was marked by sporadic communication. He sent a few postcards to his family, but these eventually stopped, leaving his loved ones in a state of uncertainty. While his intended destination was thought to be the Miami, Florida area, he had also mentioned to a friend that he might be going to Texas. The last confirmed sighting of Rodney was not in Nebraska, but in Miami, Florida, on May 15, 1985, where he was seen in the company of the same man and pregnant woman he was thought to have left Nebraska with. After this sighting, all traces of Rodney seemed to vanish, and he was never heard from again. A later piece of information surfaced that his social security number was used in the Miami area around 1992, though it is not certain if it was Rodney himself who used it.
The investigation into Rodney Longman's disappearance has been handled by Nebraska authorities, including the Lincoln Police Department and the Nebraska State Patrol. Despite the passage of decades, his case remains unsolved. Rodney is described as a white male with brown, shaggy, medium-length hair and gray eyes. He was approximately 5'11" and 150 pounds at the time he went missing. Distinguishing features include a scar on his left collarbone, and he wore either prescription glasses or contact lenses. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are murky, clouded by his involvement in the drug scene and the transient nature of his last known companions.
