In the quiet community of Spanaway, Washington, the evening of March 20, 1985, marked the beginning of a heart-wrenching mystery for the family of 16-year-old Christopher Lawrence Duffy. A young man with red or auburn hair and brown eyes, Christopher was a teenager on the cusp of adulthood. That night, he informed his mother that he was heading out to help a friend with some car trouble, a common errand for a young man of his age. He left his home on 168th Street East around 9:00 p.m., with the promise of a quick return within the hour. Christopher drove off in the family's 1979 Pontiac Firebird, unknowingly heading towards a fate that would leave his loved ones with unanswered questions for decades to come. The hour passed, and then many more, with no sign of Christopher. The initial worry grew into a full-blown investigation when his car was discovered five days later, abandoned and burnt out near the Fort Lewis Reservation. The investigation into Christopher's disappearance soon uncovered a sinister plot. It was revealed that on the night he vanished, Christopher had picked up two acquaintances: 16-year-old Eugene "Gene" Quillin and 20-year-old James "Jim" Allan Dunlap. The trio drove to the banks of the Nisqually River, a place that would become the backdrop for a brutal and senseless act of violence. An altercation broke out between Christopher and the two others, which quickly escalated. In a shocking turn of events, Christopher was thrown to the ground by Quillin, who then tragically ended the young boy's life. The aftermath of the violent encounter saw Quillin and Dunlap taking further steps to conceal their horrific actions. After ending his life, they disposed of Christopher's body by throwing it from a bridge into the Nisqually River. His body has never been recovered. In the days following the murder, Quillin was seen driving Christopher's car, the very vehicle he was accused of killing for. The investigation led to the arrests of both Quillin and Dunlap, who would eventually be held accountable for their roles in Christopher's death. Dunlap pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 12-year prison sentence. Quillin, who was initially charged as a juvenile, was later tried as an adult. He was convicted of first-degree murder, possession of stolen property, and malicious mischief, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The case of Christopher Duffy, which began as a missing person report, was closed with the conviction of his killers, but the absence of his remains leaves a lingering sorrow.
