On a brisk evening in Colonie, New York, 22-year-old Karen Louise Wilson, a promising senior at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany, vanished without a trace. The last confirmed sighting of the political science major was on March 27, 1985, at approximately 7:20 p.m. as she was leaving the Tanning Hut on Central Avenue. Karen, who was looking forward to a spring break trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was dressed in faded blue Levi's jeans, a light blue short-sleeved Izod golf shirt, and a cream-colored raincoat. She also wore white sneakers and several pieces of jewelry, including a gold ring with a light blue stone and a Seiko watch with a black face. At the time of her disappearance, she was carrying a gray cloth pocketbook, a blue nylon wallet, a plastic bag from the store 'Ups N Downs', and a blue knapsack that held a yellow dress. Following her departure from the tanning salon, it is believed Karen began walking south on Fuller Road, in the direction of the SUNY Albany campus. Several unconfirmed sightings by three separate witnesses placed her in the vicinity of Six Mile Waterworks Park and the I-90 westbound on-ramp between 8:10 p.m. and 8:20 p.m. that same evening. The area was described as being poorly lit and not heavily traveled at that time of night. One of the witnesses reported seeing a man walking near her, and a composite sketch of this individual was later created, though he has never been identified. Despite extensive searches by law enforcement, which included foot patrols, K-9 units, and helicopter surveillance of the area around Rensselaer Lake, no sign of Karen or her belongings was ever discovered. The investigation into Karen Wilson's disappearance has spanned decades, yet it remains an unsolved and heart-wrenching mystery. Authorities have explored various leads and theories over the years, including the possibility that she may have traveled to Florida as planned, but no evidence was ever found to support this. The prevailing belief among investigators is that she was abducted somewhere along Fuller Road on her way back to her dormitory. The case has been compared to the later disappearance of another SUNY Albany student, Suzanne Lyall, in 1998, though no direct link between the two cases has been established. A person of interest was identified at one point, but he passed away in a house fire in 2013 without any conclusive evidence connecting him to Karen's case.
