In the winter of 1985, a young man named Steven Douglas Bunch vanished from his hometown of Covington, Kentucky, leaving behind a series of puzzling events. On the evening of December 28th, the 26-year-old owner of Bunch's Auto Body ventured across the river to a nightclub in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was driving a rental car, as a friend had recently wrecked his personal vehicle. After spending several hours at the club, he attempted to leave around 2:00 a.m.
only to find the rental car's battery was dead. A female friend offered him a ride back to his parents' home on Warren Street in Covington, where he was living at the time.
The ride home was reportedly tense. The friend later recalled that Steven seemed unusually anxious, repeatedly looking over his shoulder. His nervousness escalated when a police car began following them, and he only relaxed once the patrol car turned off in a different direction. Upon arriving at his parents' house, Steven went inside for only a few minutes before telling his mother he was going back out because someone was coming to pick him up. His father, sensing something was amiss with his son's behavior, followed him outside and saw him walk into the backyard. That was the last time Steven was ever seen.
In the days that followed, a search of a wooded area near the family home uncovered the scarf Steven had been wearing that night. The inoperable rental car, which had been left in the nightclub's parking lot, was later found several blocks away from its original location. At the time of his disappearance, Steven was described as a white male with brown, collar-length hair and blue eyes. He had a muscular build and a distinctive dent-like scar on his right cheek. He was last seen wearing a long white overcoat that tied, a light blue sports coat, a dark blue long-sleeved shirt, dark-colored trousers, and white shoes. Rumors circulated that Steven's disappearance may have been connected to his recent testimony in a criminal case, with some speculating he had entered a witness protection program, though this was never confirmed.
