Tavia Elizabeth Bailey, a 15-year-old girl from Pensacola, Florida, disappeared on December 31, 1985, under suspicious circumstances. She was last seen when she left her home to attend a New Year's Eve party. After spending part of the evening with friends at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant, Tavia and a companion became separated. Although her friend's mother came to pick them up, Tavia had vanished, and she was never seen again.
Tavia had a troubled history, stemming from sexual abuse she endured at the hands of her stepfather when she was eight. As a result of the trauma, she experienced emotional difficulties and had spent time in group homes. By her early teens, she had become involved with drugs and had run away from home on multiple occasions, including one incident where she traveled as far as New York City. Despite her past, she always maintained contact with her mother, even during her runaway episodes. However, after her disappearance in December 1985, she never reached out again.
At the time of her disappearance, Tavia was thought to be dating an unidentified man, possibly of African-American descent, and it is suspected that she may have been taken against her will. She was last seen wearing striped jeans and a black fur coat. Authorities have considered foul play as a possibility, and her case remains unsolved to this day.
