In the late summer of 1986, fourteen-year-old Jeremy Doland Bright, a popular, sports-loving teenager, vanished from the Coos County Fair in Myrtle Point, Oregon. On August 14th, Jeremy, who was visiting from his home in Grants Pass, attended the fair with his younger sister. The two separated around 2:00 p.m., making plans to meet later that afternoon at 5:00 p.m. near the Ferris wheel, but Jeremy never arrived. He was last seen wearing a black windbreaker jacket, a red tank top, blue nylon shorts, and black Nike shoes with red laces. Concern grew the following day when his mother arrived to pick him and his sister up and discovered his wallet, watch, and house keys left behind at his stepfather's home. Initially, law enforcement considered the possibility that Jeremy had run away, perhaps with the traveling carnival, due to several reported but unconfirmed sightings of him in the days following his disappearance. However, this theory was soon questioned as it was uncharacteristic of Jeremy to abandon his younger sister, and he had left behind essential personal belongings. As days turned into weeks, the small town of Myrtle Point became filled with numerous rumors and theories about what might have happened to the missing teen. One rumor suggested that Jeremy had attended a party where he consumed a drug-laced beer, leading to a fatal overdose, and that those present had disposed of his body to avoid legal trouble. Another persistent story, which reportedly came from a jailhouse informant, claimed that Jeremy was accidentally shot while at a local swimming hole. According to this account, the individuals involved attempted to nurse him back to health at a remote cabin but he ultimately died from his injuries and was buried nearby. A significant person of interest who emerged in the investigation was Terry Lee Steinhoff, a local man who had previously babysat Jeremy. Several witnesses reported seeing Jeremy in Steinhoff's truck on the day he disappeared. Steinhoff was uncooperative with the investigation into Jeremy's case and was later convicted for the 1989 murder of a woman, a crime for which he was sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison from a drug overdose in 2007, without ever being charged in connection with Jeremy's disappearance. Despite extensive searches of various locations based on the circulating rumors, including ponds, rivers, and private properties, no trace of Jeremy has ever been found. Over the years, his family has endured immense pain, holding a memorial service for him on the 25th anniversary of his disappearance in 2011. The case of Jeremy Bright remains an open investigation, a haunting mystery that has left a lasting scar on the community of Myrtle Point, with his family still hoping for answers and closure.
