Juan Jose Tristan was only seven weeks old when he disappeared on August 3, 1987, from Sunland, California. At the time, Juan and his mother, Christina Torres, were living at the Senator Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. On the morning of August 2, Torres left Juan in the care of a babysitter she knew only as "Maria" while she went to a job interview.
Torres was supposed to meet Maria and Juan later that day at Pershing Park Square, but neither the babysitter nor Juan showed up for the meeting.
Torres reported her son missing the following day. Investigators believe Maria, who may have also used the name Teresa Anderson, likely abducted Juan either to raise him herself or to sell him. She has never been identified, and there has been no sign of Juan since his disappearance. Authorities described Maria as a white woman, about 5'4" with reddish-blonde hair, and suspected she might have ties to a gang.
