Juan Jose Tristan was only seven weeks old when he disappeared on August 3, 1987, from Sunland, California. At the time, Juan and his mother, Christina Torres, were living at the Senator Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. On the morning of August 2, Torres left Juan in the care of a babysitter she knew only as "Maria" while she went to a job interview. Torres was supposed to meet Maria and Juan later that day at Pershing Park Square, but neither the babysitter nor Juan showed up for the meeting.
