On the day of his disappearance, he told his mother he was going with a friend to a basketball game at Upland High School. However, the game was actually being held in Chino, not Upland. Patrick, who often went by his middle name Shawn, was last seen at The Pizza Chalet on Foothill Boulevard and Euclid Avenue, where he and his friend played video games.
Witnesses reported that he left the establishment with an unidentified juvenile male. Patrick never returned home, and his family reported him missing the following morning.
Initial investigations led authorities to believe Patrick may have run away due to a recent incident at school that required him to attend juvenile court. However, his parents were skeptical, noting that he had left behind his favorite blanket, something he always took with him when upset.
Suspicion briefly fell on the owners of the Pizza Chalet, as they closed the restaurant and left the country shortly after Patrick disappeared, but no evidence was found linking them to the case.
