Kristen Smith, a 20-year-old woman, went missing from Beaumont, Texas, on September 22, 1991. On the day of her disappearance, Kristen, who had recently told her husband, John Smith, that she wanted a divorce, was last seen leaving to go shopping, an activity she was rarely allowed to do alone. Her teal Honda CRX was later found abandoned in a Target parking lot, with her personal belongings still inside, suggesting that she may have been taken against her will.
Kristen had married John Smith, a local pawnshop owner, and soon after, he isolated her from her family. Despite this, Kristen maintained secret contact with her mother. Just a week before she vanished, she had informed John of her desire to end their marriage. Given the controlling nature of her relationship, her sudden disappearance raised immediate concerns of foul play. Although John was considered a prime suspect, he died of heart disease in 1992 before any charges could be brought against him.
Investigators suspect foul play in Kristen's case, but no significant breakthroughs have been made since John's death.
