Jefferson Brian Arms, a 22-year-old from Westminster, Vermont, went missing on September 18, 1992, during a sailing trip on Lake Champlain near Plattsburgh, New York. He and two friends had set out on a 16-foot Sunfish sailboat and were approximately one mile east of Schuyler Island when they encountered rough water, causing the boat to capsize twice. The group, all wearing life jackets, decided to swim to Schuyler Island for safety.
Jefferson's friends swam ahead, frequently looking back to see him swimming behind them. However, while the friends reached the island, Jefferson did not.
Despite an extensive search, his life jacket and the overturned boat were found, but Jefferson himself was never located. Although presumed to have drowned, Jefferson's case remains classified as a missing person, as his body was never recovered.
