In the midst of a frigid Kentucky winter, a young father named Joel Mark Wells vanished under perplexing and frightening circumstances. Less than 24 hours prior, a local high school student had been tragically murdered during a robbery at a gas station, an event that had cast a pall of fear over the town. The dogs were able to follow a scent trail from the shopping center, across the Hazard bypass, and to the banks of the icy river located behind City Hall, where the trail abruptly ended. Extensive searches of the river and the surrounding land were conducted by police, family, and volunteers, but they yielded no clues as to what happened to Joel. Authorities looked into a possible connection between Joel's disappearance and the murder that had occurred the previous day, but they could not find any evidence to link the two events. Described by his family as a happy and loving person who cherished his two sons, Joel's case remains an unsolved and painful mystery.
