In April 1994, 23-year-old Karen Denise Wells, a single mother from Haskell, Oklahoma, embarked on a cross-country road trip to visit a childhood friend in Bergen, New Jersey. She left her 14-month-old son in the care of her parents on April 10th and set off in a rented white 1993 Plymouth Acclaim. After getting lost multiple times and driving for over 20 hours, a weary Karen decided to stop for the night in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on April 12th.
