On a cold December morning in 1995, the lives of the Markley family of Bristolville, Ohio, were unalterably changed. Johnny Markley, a 36-year-old independent truck driver, and his wife Shelly, were last seen at their home on Greenville Road on December 15th. The day began like any other, with the couple helping their five children get ready for school. Later that morning, at approximately 10:36 a.m., Johnny and Shelly were seen at a Bank One drive-thru in Bloomfield, about five miles from their residence. A bank teller recalled seeing Johnny driving their pickup truck with Shelly in the middle seat. Beside her was an unidentified man. Shelly cashed a check for $1,000, leaving a small balance in their account. This transaction would be the last confirmed sighting of the couple. When the Markley children returned from school that afternoon, they were met with an unsettling silence. Their parents were gone, and the house was unlocked. Several things were out of place, creating a sense of unease. A coffeepot in the kitchen had been left on and had nearly boiled dry. Johnny's wristwatch, which he always wore, was on a shelf above the stove, and Shelly's cigarettes and lighter were left on the kitchen counter, items she would typically take with her. Upstairs, the family's gun cabinet, which was always kept locked, was found open. A small safe in the master bedroom was also open, with personal documents like birth certificates scattered about. Their red and gray 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck was also missing. The couple was expected at calling hours for Johnny's twin sister, who had passed away just two days prior, but they never arrived. A few days later, the Markley's pickup truck was found locked and abandoned in a store parking lot ten miles from their home. Inside the truck was the couple's cell phone, but the keys were missing. In the truck's bed were the tarps that normally covered Johnny’s cherished 1978 Corvette, which he never left uncovered. The discovery of the truck, however, brought no answers. The investigation that followed involved extensive searches by law enforcement and hundreds of volunteers, who combed the surrounding lands, while divers searched nearby lakes and quarries, but no trace of the couple was found. A man named Steven Durst was later arrested and convicted of extortion after attempting to get money from the family by claiming he had information about the couple. However, investigators concluded he likely had no actual knowledge of their whereabouts. The case of Johnny and Shelly Markley has remained unsolved for decades, a painful and enduring mystery for their five children and the community. Foul play is suspected in their disappearance, but without any significant leads or the discovery of their remains, their family has been left with only questions and the hope that one day they will find the answers they so desperately seek.
