Cornelia Meyer, a 27-year-old German tourist, disappeared on July 22, 1996, while exploring Death Valley, California, with her boyfriend Egbert Rimkus, their children, Georg Weber (11) and Max Meyer (4). The group, visiting from Germany, was last known to be at Furnace Creek Visitor Center, where they purchased a guidebook before venturing into the treacherous terrain of the Panamint Mountains.
