Pilar Rodriguez, a 3-year-old girl, disappeared on January 30, 1999, while in the care of her babysitter, Melissa Cooper, during a trip to Punta Gorda, Florida. Pilar’s father, Marco Rodriguez, had given permission for the babysitter to take Pilar on vacation for two weeks. Along with Cooper, her boyfriend, Keith Allen Wilson, was present during the trip. When the child failed to return by February 22, Marco reported her missing.
Initially, both Cooper and Wilson gave conflicting stories about Pilar’s whereabouts, with Wilson falsely claiming that Pilar had been picked up by Marco and later suggesting that Pilar had been abused by her father. However, no evidence of abuse or involvement by Marco was found. Cooper eventually revealed that Wilson had become violent towards both her and Pilar, recounting that he struck Pilar, causing her to convulse. Wilson allegedly refused to seek medical help, fearing the visible bruises would incriminate him. Tragically, Pilar died from her injuries, and Wilson disposed of her body.
Search efforts, including draining Preacher’s Lake, uncovered some biological evidence, but Pilar’s remains were never fully recovered. Cooper was eventually charged with aggravated manslaughter for failing to protect Pilar and later pleaded guilty to being an accessory to murder in exchange for testifying against Wilson. In 2017, Wilson was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, but Pilar's body has never been found, and the case remains a tragic reminder of the unanswered questions surrounding her death.
