On the morning of June 9, 2000, 56-year-old Eugene Albert Cerney told his wife he was going to ride his ten-speed bicycle into town to take care of some business from their home in Rolla, Missouri. Dressed in a black sweater, black sweatpants, and a black cap, he set off from his residence. Cerney, who had Parkinson's Disease, took with him a two-day supply of his medication.
He was described as a white male, six feet tall, weighing between 180 and 185 pounds, with gray hair, hazel eyes, and a full beard. He also wore glasses and had a large scar on the back of one of his knees. That morning was the last time his family ever saw him.
Following his disappearance, an extensive search of the area was conducted, but it yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. There were several unconfirmed sightings of a man matching Cerney's description in Springfield, Missouri, shortly after he was reported missing, but authorities were never able to verify these reports. As the years passed with no sign of Cerney, he was legally declared dead in 2006. His family was left without answers, and his case grew cold. Cerney was known to enjoy bicycling and trading cards.
For over two decades, the disappearance of Eugene Cerney remained a mystery. Then, in March 2026, skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area in central Phelps County, not far from where he was last seen. A bicycle was also found near the remains. Using dental records, forensic odontologist Dr. Eric Wilson was able to positively identify the remains as belonging to Eugene Cerney.
