Modesto Robles Jr., a 43-year-old man from Matagorda, Texas, went missing on September 8, 2000, during a deep-sea fishing trip with two friends, Hilario "Larry" Cardenas and Daniel Gonzales. The trio set out on a 25-foot white Wellcraft boat, equipped with twin 115-horsepower Yamaha outboard engines, from Matagorda Bay. However, they never returned from their trip, and their boat has never been found.
A large-scale search effort was launched by the U.S.
Coast Guard, covering over 35,000 square miles, but it yielded minimal results. Only two coolers, one tied to a shoe, were found floating in the water. Ten days after their disappearance, severed leg bones were discovered on Mustang Island, and a few days later, additional skeletal remains were found on Padre Island. DNA testing confirmed the remains belonged to Cardenas and Gonzales, but no trace of Robles or the boat was ever found. The cause of the men's deaths remains undetermined, and Robles continues to be listed as missing.
