In the summer of 2001, the life of a 13-year-old boy named Justin Richardson took a turn that left his family and community with unanswered questions. Known to some by his nickname, 'Little Man,' Justin, a male with brown hair and brown eyes, disappeared around July 2, 2001, from the area of the Kaibab National Forest, just south of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. On the evening of June 29, 2001, Justin accompanied three older friends, all between the ages of 18 and 21, into the forest. Reports from investigators suggest the group had gone to the area to party and was allegedly using methamphetamine. He was last seen wearing a red Chicago Bulls basketball jersey and denim shorts.
The circumstances leading up to Justin's disappearance are a confusing sequence of events. While in the forest, the group of four became separated, and two of Justin's friends were lost. In response, Justin and his remaining friend traveled to the nearby town of Tusayan to ask another individual for help in searching for the missing pair. While they were seeking help, the two lost friends were located by employees of the Grand Canyon Railway south of Tusayan, a development that Justin was tragically unaware of. Justin and his companion then returned to the Kaibab National Forest, camping at a location miles from where the other friends had been found. According to the sole companion with him, he fell asleep around 9:00 a.m. and woke up eight hours later at 5:00 p.m. to find that Justin was gone.
After discovering Justin was missing, his companion did not immediately alert authorities; instead, he hitched a ride back to town. Justin's father reported his son missing on July 1st. An extensive search of the forest involving helicopters, search dogs, and numerous searchers on foot and in vehicles commenced, but it yielded no clues to Justin's whereabouts. Investigators have been left with several conflicting theories. Justin had run away from home once before, leading to the possibility that he may have done so again, perhaps attempting to hitchhike to Chicago to visit his girlfriend. Despite his familiarity with the area, authorities have also expressed strong suspicions of foul play, believing he may have been killed shortly after he disappeared. The investigation revealed that Justin, described as a popular teen, had allegedly been struggling with drug and alcohol abuse for about a year before he vanished.
