On September 12, 2004, an 11-year-old boy named Richard "Cody" Haynes vanished from his home in Kittitas, Washington. The night before his disappearance, Cody, an 11-year-old male, was punished for refusing to do the dishes. His father's girlfriend, Marla Harding, made him sit at the kitchen table for several hours before sending him to his bedroom around midnight. His sisters were instructed not to go near his room, and Cody was told not to leave for any reason. Tragically, it's reported that no adult checked on the young boy for nearly 18 hours. When his father, Richard Haynes Sr., and Harding finally went to his room between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. on September 12th, Cody was gone. Around 6:00 p.m., they contacted the police to report him as a runaway. The initial investigation into Cody's disappearance raised numerous questions and concerns. Cody’s bicycle and a bag containing his clothing were discovered in a shed near his home, leading some to believe he may have planned to leave and return. However, the circumstances within the home were troubling. Neither Cody's father nor his girlfriend participated in community searches or a candlelight vigil held for the missing boy. Shortly after he vanished, Cody's four sisters were removed from the home and placed in foster care due to allegations of abuse, neglect, and lack of supervision. The removal was primarily based on the fact that Cody had been confined to his room for an extended period without access to food, water, or a toilet, and without being checked on by an adult. There was also a history of reports made to Child Protection Services concerning the possible physical and emotional abuse of the Haynes children in the years preceding Cody's disappearance. As the investigation progressed, more disturbing details came to light. One of Cody's sisters later told investigators that he had been severely beaten on the day he went missing. When police searched the family's apartment, they found that the flooring in the kitchen had been replaced without the landlord's permission. A subsequent search led to what authorities called a "significant discovery," though they have not publicly elaborated on what was found. Cody’s father and his girlfriend retained lawyers and were uncooperative with the investigation into his disappearance. The case, which is now considered a suspected homicide, was turned over to the FBI in October 2005 and remains unsolved. Due to his age and the unsettling circumstances surrounding his family life, Cody is considered to be in danger. The case of Richard "Cody" Haynes is a haunting and tragic story of a young boy who disappeared under a cloud of suspicion and unanswered questions.
