In November 2005, a report was made to the Aurora Police Department in Colorado regarding a missing six-year-old girl named Aarone Thompson. Her father, Aaron Thompson, claimed she had run away from home after an argument over a cookie. At the time of her disappearance, Aarone was described as having black hair, brown eyes, and a missing top right canine tooth. She was reportedly last seen wearing a white sweater, a gray hooded sweatshirt, pink sweatpants, and white sneakers, with her hair in a ponytail secured with a pink rubber band. The initial report sparked a significant search effort involving numerous police officers and volunteers who scoured the area around the Thompson home. However, the search for the young girl yielded no signs of her whereabouts.
As the investigation progressed, inconsistencies and troubling details began to emerge. Investigators noted that neither Aaron Thompson nor his live-in girlfriend, Shely Lowe, seemed particularly distressed about Aarone's disappearance, despite the freezing weather conditions. Within days, the focus of the investigation shifted from a missing person case to a homicide. Authorities announced they had received information suggesting that Aarone had been deceased for possibly a year and a half before she was reported missing and that the report of her running away was a fabrication. The other children living in the home were removed and placed in protective custody. It was later revealed that the children had been instructed to lie about Aarone's disappearance and subsequently disclosed details of ongoing abuse within the household. Tragically, Aarone's body has never been found.
The case against Aaron Thompson moved forward, culminating in a trial where he faced numerous charges, including child abuse resulting in death. During the trial, prosecutors presented a disturbing picture of a home where children were subjected to regular beatings. The other children who had lived in the house testified against Thompson, recounting the abuse they had endured. In 2009, an Arapahoe County jury found Aaron Thompson guilty on 31 of the charges, including the most serious charge of child abuse resulting in death. He was subsequently sentenced to 114 years in prison. Shely Lowe, who was also a person of interest, passed away in 2006 from a heart condition before she could be fully questioned by police or face any charges. The case of Aarone Thompson is a heartbreaking story of a young life lost to abuse and neglect, a disappearance shrouded in deceit, and a search for justice that, while leading to a conviction, has yet to bring the closure of finding her remains.
