In the late summer of 2006, in the heavily wooded and remote area of Munising, Michigan, 85-year-old Raymond Wallace Perry went missing. On August 22nd, a home-care nurse saw him at his residence on Monette Road around noon. Mr. Perry, who lived with his wife of 65 years, Myrtle, was an Alzheimer's patient. When the nurse returned the following day, his wife mentioned she thought he might have gone to the hospital. He had left without his prescription glasses, which he needed due to limited eyesight, as well as his wallet, watch, and dentures. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a Caucasian male with gray hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'8" and weighing around 165 pounds. He was believed to be wearing a light-colored plaid shirt, dark jeans with one-inch red suspenders, and size 10 low-top tennis shoes. One of his distinguishing physical features was his crooked fingers, a result of arthritis. The official report of his disappearance was made to the Alger County Sheriff's Department on the afternoon of August 23, 2006, which prompted an immediate and extensive search of the rugged terrain surrounding his home. Dozens of foot searchers, K-9 units, vehicles, and aerial assets were deployed in a comprehensive effort to locate him. Tracking dogs were able to follow Mr. Perry's scent to the south end of Monette Road, where it intersects with Alger County Highway 58, approximately eight miles east of Munising, but the trail went cold from there. Despite the exhaustive grid searches, no signs of Mr. Perry were ever discovered. Foul play is not suspected in his disappearance. Raymond Wallace Perry had been a resident of Monette Road for 35 years and was a well-known member of the community. He was a retiree from the Kimberly-Clark mill and was a father to nine children. His interests included hunting, fishing, gardening, and raising farm animals. The years have passed since he was last seen, but the investigation into his whereabouts remains open. The Alger County Sheriff's Department continues to follow up on any leads that emerge, keeping the hope of providing answers to his family alive. The case of Raymond Perry serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with Alzheimer's and the lasting impact of a person's disappearance on their loved ones and the wider community.
