In the late summer of 2007, 38-year-old Robert K. Vernier’s life took an unexpected and alarming turn, leaving his family and friends in a state of perpetual uncertainty. On August 28th, he was last seen in Merryville, Louisiana, a small town in Beauregard Parish. Robert, who was battling severe kidney disease and required dialysis treatments every three days while awaiting a transplant, had traveled to Houston, Texas, with two companions. His health condition was serious, and he also experienced difficulty walking, making his subsequent disappearance all the more concerning for those who knew and cared for him. The trip back to Louisiana would prove to be a fateful journey, marking the last time anyone has reported seeing or hearing from Robert. The circumstances surrounding Robert's disappearance are rooted in a single-vehicle accident. On the return trip from Houston, the car carrying Robert and his friends crashed into a telephone pole on Louisiana Highway 389 and Monroe Whitman Road, just south of Merryville. According to the two friends who were with him, Robert walked away from the scene of the accident and vanished. This account triggered a search by investigators who scoured the area for any sign of the missing man. They discovered tracks near the Sabine River and a nearby slough, which seemed to lead back up a highline along the highway. A two-mile radius around the crash site was thoroughly searched, but aside from the tracks, no other trace of Robert was ever found. Despite being described as a knowledgeable woodsman, Robert’s serious health issues made it unlikely that he could have survived for an extended period outdoors on his own. The search efforts yielded no further clues, and the trail went cold. While foul play is not officially suspected in his case, the lack of any contact or evidence of his whereabouts has led to the sorrowful presumption that he is no longer alive. At the time he went missing, Robert was described as a white male with brown hair and green eyes, standing between 5'6" and 5'7" tall, and weighing between 135 and 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, blue jeans, and Nike sneakers. The Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office continues to hold the case file for Robert Vernier, a man whose sudden disappearance after a car wreck has left a void of unanswered questions and a family waiting for closure.
