In the autumn of 2008, a 41-year-old man named Jeffery Lynn Combs vanished from his home in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, leaving behind a series of puzzling clues. On October 23rd, while his mother was at work, Jeffery, who was known as Jeff to those close to him, seemingly set out on a personal mission from which he would not return. His mother came home from her job to an unsettling scene: food left cooking on the stove and a set of her son's wet, tattered clothes abandoned in the
house. A handwritten note from Jeffery explained his abrupt absence; he claimed that his scooter, two helmets, and his cell phone had been stolen. In the note, he declared his intention to track down the thief and included a chilling request: 'If I’m not back by dark, come looking for me.'
Jeffery had faced significant challenges in his life. A stroke months prior to his disappearance had left him with a paralyzed left arm and limited use of his right hand. He also had distinctive tattoos, including barbed wire around one arm and a large bulldog on his left arm from his shoulder to his elbow. In the period leading up to his disappearance, Jeffery had befriended a man and a woman who were experiencing homelessness and were camping near the Reddies River, not far from his home. His mother had asked them to leave her property after a disagreement. It was in the direction of their camp that Jeffery apparently headed on the day he went missing.
A few days after Jeffery was reported missing, law enforcement located his scooter near the Reddies River, not far from Suncrest Orchard Road; however, it was missing some parts. One of the two missing helmets was also found in the vicinity. The homeless individuals he had befriended were questioned by police, and they reported seeing Jeffery get into a car with two unidentified women. Despite these leads, the investigation into Jeffery Lynn Combs's disappearance has grown cold over the years. The circumstances surrounding his last known moments, as described in his own words, paint a picture of a man determined to retrieve his stolen property. Yet, the discovery of his abandoned belongings and the lack of any further contact have left his family with unanswered questions and a case that remains a mystery.
