On the morning of October 27, 2008, 40-year-old Sheila Kathleen McBroom departed from her Anchorage, Alaska, residence, telling her family she was heading to her job with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Elmendorf Air Force Base. However, her actions that morning suggested a different destination. Family members noted she was wearing her walking shoes instead of her usual work shoes. Later that morning, at approximately 8:30 a.m., an Alaska State Trooper pulled over Sheila's green 1996 GMC pickup truck on the Seward Highway at mile 106, about six miles south of Girdwood. This location was not on her route to work; in fact, it was in the opposite direction. The trooper had been alerted to a vehicle driving erratically, but after conducting a sobriety test, which Sheila passed, he concluded she was just tired. She informed the officer of her fatigue, and he suggested she take a nap before continuing her journey. This interaction would be the last confirmed sighting of Sheila McBroom. Her husband reported her missing the next day, October 28, 2008, when she failed to return home. A few days later, on October 31, her pickup truck was discovered abandoned at the same location where the trooper had stopped her, at mile 106 of the Seward Highway. All of her personal belongings, including her cell phone, were found inside the vehicle, which was in good working order. There were no immediate signs of foul play at the scene. The discovery of her intact vehicle only deepened the mystery surrounding her disappearance. An extensive search of the area was conducted but yielded no clues as to her whereabouts. The circumstances leading up to Sheila's disappearance paint a complex picture. Just days before she went missing, her teenage daughter had returned home for a visit after being away at a school in another state for over a year, a reunion that reportedly brought Sheila great joy. However, there were also indications of family stress, with some tension between Sheila and her husband related to their daughter's situation. Sheila was an active member of her local Mormon church and maintained a blog where she wrote about her life and faith. Her family does not believe she would have voluntarily abandoned them. The case remains unsolved, leaving her loved ones with unanswered questions about what happened to her after that final roadside stop. The Anchorage Police Department continues to list her as a missing person.
