Laurence Kailanii Brannum, a 9-year-old boy, went missing on April 15, 2009, during a camping trip near Paradise Beach in Santa Maria, California. Laurence, who often went by his middle name "Kailanii," was last seen playing on the rocks at the north end of the beach near Mussel Rock. While exploring the tide pools, he was tragically knocked over by a wave and swept out to sea.
The remote location made it difficult to get help quickly; the nearest area with cell phone reception required a three-hour walk, so authorities were not alerted until hours later.
Despite an extensive search of the dangerous and rough waters, no trace of Laurence or his body was ever found. Laurence, who was adopted along with his siblings, was described as a bright and adventurous child who loved the outdoors, animals, and sports. His family and investigators believe he likely drowned, but without his body being recovered, he remains listed as missing.
