On September 11, 1977, a 37-year-old woman named Mary Jean Sylvestre was on a moose hunting trip with three friends in the rugged wilderness of Palmer, Alaska. A resident of Buffalo Mine Road, located between Palmer and Sutton, Mary was an experienced outdoor enthusiast. The group was navigating the Granite Creek area, about six miles past Sutton, when they attempted to cross the rushing water on horseback.
