On April 30, 1978, nine-year-old Christopher William Vigil was enjoying a day of hiking with his mother and younger brother on the Grey Rock Mountain Trail in Poudre Park, Colorado. An energetic and adventurous child, Christopher hiked ahead of his family and was last seen on the trail. Hours later, when he did not return, his mother reported him missing at 5:30 p.m.
This marked the beginning of a nearly five-decade-long mystery that has become the oldest active missing person case in Fort Collins. Christopher, a popular honor roll student at Cache la Poudre Elementary School, was known for his love of the outdoors and physical activities like swimming, roller skating, and running. He was described as being tall for his age, with brown hair and green eyes. On the day he disappeared, he was wearing a dark green knit shirt, green plaid pants, blue sneakers, and a distinctive purple or maroon denim jacket.
An extensive and immediate search was launched in the rugged terrain of Poudre Canyon, involving 170 foot searchers, 30 individuals on horseback, three helicopters, and tracking dogs. Despite the exhaustive efforts, no trace of Christopher was ever found. The weather took a severe turn on the night of his disappearance, with temperatures dropping below freezing and the area being hit with wind, rain, sleet, and snow. Authorities acknowledged that without shelter, it would have been difficult for the young boy to survive the harsh conditions, especially since he was unfamiliar with the Grey Rock trail. The search was eventually suspended after nearly a week due to an incoming snowstorm that was expected to bring three to five feet of snow.
Several other hikers were on the trail that day, but most were never identified. Two women who came forward reported seeing Christopher and also noticed a man with dark hair and a dark complexion sitting on some rocks nearby, wearing a straw-colored cowboy hat and with a camera around his neck. These women later heard a young boy's voice yelling and felt that something was wrong but were too afraid to investigate. When they passed the spot where the man had been, he was gone, but they found a Diet Pepsi can on the ground. Christopher had been carrying a can of his favorite drink, Diet Pepsi, and his family stated that it was uncharacteristic of him to litter. In the months that followed his disappearance, there were several unconfirmed sightings of a boy resembling Christopher in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. Witnesses described a boy who appeared 'scared,' 'confused,' and 'dirty,' who was reportedly selling newspapers to earn a trip to Disneyland. However, none of these sightings could be verified.
