In the spring of 1990, 72-year-old Woodrow Wilson Grimland embarked on a journey from his home in Needles, California, with the intention of visiting relatives in Plainview, Texas. On May 9, 1990, he made a stop in Flagstaff, Arizona, to spend time with his son, Ronald, and his family. After the visit, Woodrow left his son's home, continuing on his trip. This was the last time he was officially seen by his family. He was a Caucasian male, described as being between 5'11' and 6'1' tall, and weighing between 175 and 195 pounds. He had graying blond hair and either blue or green eyes. When he was last seen, he was wearing a plaid flannel shirt and Levi jeans.

Concern grew when Woodrow never arrived in Texas and could not be reached. Two days after he was last seen, on May 11, 1990, his family reported him missing to the authorities in Needles, California. In the days that followed, his son and daughter-in-law retraced the route he would have taken from Flagstaff to Plainview, posting flyers and searching for any sign of him. During their search, they learned of a potential sighting of Woodrow at a truck stop in Clines Corner, New Mexico, on the evening of May 9th. Woodrow was traveling in his dark metallic green 1985 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, which had a camper shell on the back and California license plate number 2LM87322. He was also accompanied by his dachshund.

The investigation into Woodrow Grimland's disappearance has spanned decades, yet his whereabouts remain unknown. His family noted that he had a habit of picking up hitchhikers and expressed concern that he may have encountered foul play. Woodrow, a widower whose wife had passed away the year before his disappearance, had plans to move in with his son and his family in Flagstaff. He suffered from arthritis, which had caused his hands to become crippled into a hook-like shape. The case remains open, a long-standing mystery of a man who vanished while on a cross-country trip to visit loved ones. His vehicle has never been located, and he has not been seen or heard from since 1990.
