In September 1994, 73-year-old John Francis Lenihan embarked on a solo vacation to Colorado from his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His wife of seventeen years did not join him on the trip. To share his experiences with her, Lenihan brought along a tape recorder, making recordings of his travels to send back home. On September 10, his vacation took a distressing turn when he was last seen in Georgetown, Colorado.
That same day, the Clear Creek County Sheriff's deputies located his rented Buick Century, abandoned at the Cloudland picnic area, which is situated about four miles east of Colorado Highway 103.
Inside the deserted vehicle, authorities discovered Lenihan's personal belongings, including his clothing, camera, and the tape recorder he had been using to document his trip. The final recording on the tape detailed his intention to explore a hiking trail and mentioned a pleasant encounter with a young couple from Colorado with whom he had stopped to take pictures. He described them as being in their 20s and noted that they had chatted for about half an hour. When investigators developed the film from his camera, the last photograph showed Lenihan, dressed in a short-sleeved shirt and shorts, approximately half a mile from where his car was found.
Following the discovery of his car, extensive search efforts were launched in the surrounding area. For several days, teams combed the rugged terrain, but found no trace of the missing 73-year-old. The search was unfortunately suspended in October due to heavy snowfall, which made further efforts impossible. Authorities have stated that they do not suspect foul play in Lenihan's disappearance. The prevailing theories suggest that he may have gotten lost or suffered a fall while hiking. It is also considered that the high altitude, at around 11,000 feet, could have been a factor, especially for someone unaccustomed to it. Lenihan, who had previously worked as a piano and organ salesman and as a civilian employee for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department before his retirement in 1986, had been recovering from cancer and suffered from an arthritic hip.
